baseline
Some of the things I thought went well were things like the how we were able to crosscut between the scenes and the fact that it all went smoothly and I was able to remember what I was doing and saying. In the planning stages, I was able to follow what was going on and figure out what I was meant to be doing.
However there were things that didn’t go so well, for example, I think my ability to act drunk wasn’t the best and is definitely something that I need to improve on. Something else that didn’t go so well but wasn’t a major flaw was the fact that I got up from the wrong side of the chair I was sitting on, this didn’t have a major impact on my performance but it did make the scene look less smooth.
I felt that some of the things that I could improve on are my special awareness as it would have helped with how I moved around the stage and how I got up from that chair. I could also improve on my ability to act drunk, this can be achieved by watching other people do it and make note or maybe I could just get drunk myself so that I have that experience to draw from.
final evaluation
Over the course of a few months, I have been able to progress really far with my skills and knowledge in the course. We’ve done a lot of units and work about different skills and techniques such as characterisation, improvisation, voice, volume etc. These skills have improved my ability to act when we did our baseline performance and evaluated it; I was able to learn what I needed to improve on over the course.
We had to adopt a play called ‘Bad muff’ and we based all of our activities around this play, for example, we had to do some hot seating where we had to play as our character and find out more about them. This helped me with playing my character as it allowed me to understand what he is like and how I could play him better. We also did other things like conscience corridor which allowed me to think about my character and how they would respond to different stimulus.
We’ve had to do a lot of group and single work so I have been able to develop my skills in both situations so I have been able to work more effectively in both. One of the group performances I did was where I had to do some off text improvisation and act a scene out where my character (Brendan) had to act out a scene with Brandon’s character (Lanny) and we had to figure out a scene where we would have our status’ change throughout the scene. This was a good way to get a better understanding of what status is and also how our character would react to the change in status.
Overall I think I have learnt a lot of my time doing the course, I have learnt a lot of new techniques and skills and how to work both in a team and on my own. I think my progress as an actor has progressed a decent amount and that I have grown in confidence since the start
